Mom’s Tin Box

I
have known
this tin box
–decorated with embossed cameo
painted carefully to look real
As if stone and metal met
to create a sense of precious value
for those who could not afford actual jewels–
for nearly 60 years. Perhaps Mom too
was catipulted into some exotic fantasy
about achieving the American Dream
of wealth and prosperity,
the promised opportunity,
freedom from
poverty.

    it’s beautiful-strange how certain objects
    become infused with little
    macrocosms of the
    one you
    love
