Cactus Flower

Yesterday
a flower,
already gone today,
from a prickly pear
cactus outside the window–delicate,
translucent, like a baby’s hand in
the desert sun, startling even with its
pale yellow, not lemon, not mustard, against drab
olives, sages and yellows of the arid landscape here–
attracted my eye, the dance of honey bees
seeking, mapping the location of its pollen,
a passive beacon in the desert,
an organizing structure for activity,
where lives seem impossible,
where brutal existances
persist until
tomorrows.
